DOUBLE DUTCH....???
                  of course!!!
Having always had a great interest in Dutch cavies -you know the thought: "one day I have a few of them in the shed and see if I can breed a winner"; I finally managed to purchase a trio in July 2006.

AND.... of course, they were Chocolate Dutch!

As often happens, the boar did not work at all, so after 6 months I still had not bred any baby Dutch. I bought in a very young boar and after a while the Dutch babies started arriving.

Dutch are a very prolific breed in every sense of the word. They eat well (in actual fact they will eat any left overs from my rather more fussy Self Chocolates. They also breed very well: putting a pair together often results in a very rapid mating and a large (sometimes 6 or 7 babies) litter will arrive around 10 weeks later.

Since June 2008, Dutch can be found in my shed in two colours, as some Blacks made their entrance.
So, from here onwards the page will have to be two sided -the left hand side is dedicated to the Chocolate Dutch and the right hand side will feature the Black Dutch...

Unfortunately, I have no photographs whatsoever of my initial trio of Chocolate Dutch that I acquired in July 2006.
Once I had replaced the original boar with a younger, new one. the babies started appearing. But none of them looked like anything to write home about.
Inspecting some of the offspring on the left hand side, the markings looked really perfect, but then turning to the right hand side -some serious faults could be spotted.
The same applied to the "top and under" aspect: looking from above, the markings looked somewhere decent, but then turning them over, they appeared to be withour stops, undercut dragging into the front legs etc.

So, it took me exactly 18 months to breed the first baby that was "showable" -not a world beater or a perfect specimen, but "showable".
I was over the moon -YES..... I had done it!
The first Black Dutch entered my life and the shed in June 2008. I was very lucky to acquire a pair of Sue Hearn's very best.
A few weeks later, a trio was bought in from Christine Peachey. Said trio were pure descendants of a very old line, formerly belonging to Jonathan Billing. With the trio came a well marked and showable baby sow -'Astley'.
Sue Hearn's pair -Trevaskis and Kenwyn were paired up in July; they produced a boar and a sow on 11/09/2008.
More information about these two can be found on the "Litters" page.
I try to be very selective with the Dutch and therefore I do not have dozens and dozens of them.
My entire stud of Chocolate Dutch comprises 3 Adult boars and 1 baby boar plus 6 sows.

I will take this opportunity to introduce some of them to you:
Trevaskis
Kenwyn
Well ... in the mean time, the trio I had from Chris have travelled on to their final destination: the Netherlands!! They will be very well looked after by a fancier, who is keen to get a strain of good black Dutch going.

But I have kept Astley -hopefully she will be a nice outcross to the Sue Hearn line.
This is "MintyRey" -she was born on 21. March 2008 out of AnnRey and IanRey. Both parents came to me from ian Reynolds from Swindon.
"Truus" was born on 29. February 2008 (a once in every 4 years experience!). Her parents are "Trijntje" and "Willem". She also travelled to the European Show in Holland early June and competed very well.
"Verkade" is an interesting pig, as she is the second generation of a Chocolate Dutch sow to a pure Self Chocolate boar. Her markings are perfect, but for the fact that her undercut runs into her right front leg.
Meet "Wessel"! Boar born on 4. June 2008 and photographed at 3 weeks old. His parents are "Toos" and "Willem" and his markings are all there, but for the minimal, balanced toe stops. His first outing will be at the DCC Stock Show on 4. October. Good luck, Wessel!
"Wilma" was born on 2. May 2007 -her parents were "Primrose" (one of the original sows in the first trio from Carnival Cavies) and "Wilmot" purchased from Wilmot Goldsworthy.
